A goalless away draw was enough to put Amsterdam football club Ajax back into the Champions League competition after a four year absence on Tuesday night.

Despite several missed chances and a penalty that hit the post, Ajax were clearly the stronger side. ‘It was near-total domination from Ajax and how they did not score a number of goals is quite a mystery,’ Uefa said on its website.

The away draw against Dynamo Kyiv came on top of Ajax’s first leg 3-1 victory at home. Qualifying for the group stage of the Champions League will boost Ajax’ coffers by some €40m, Dutch media reported.

Meanwhile, it is still unclear if Hakim Ziyech will remain in Amsterdam for the rest of the season. The player, described as one of the stars of Ajax, wants a transfer and has held talks with AS Roma among other clubs.

His contract with Ajax runs until 2021 and the club is now considering upping his salary, given the good combination he has formed with new signing Dusan Tadic, the NRC reported.

The transfer market closes on Friday.
