Amsterdam football club Ajax drew 2-2 against Standard Liege in the third qualifying round for this season’s Champions League competition, after going into the second half 0-2 up, thanks to goals by Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and new signing Dusan Tadić

However, Standard scored in the 67th minute and then again from a penalty in the dying seconds of extra time.

‘In itself 2-2 is a good result but there was more in it,’ coach Erik ten Hag said after the match. ‘We had a great chance to make it 0-3 after the break, so it is a real shame it ended up 2-2.’

The return leg takes place in Amsterdam next week. The winners will meet either lavia Praha or Dynamo Kyiv in the play-offs for a place in the group stage.
