Thursday was the warmest night on record as the heatwave continues
Thursday night was the warmest ever recorded in the Netherlands, with the temperature dropping no lower than 23.6 degrees at the Bilt weather station near Hilversum.
The old record dates from 2004 when it was no cooler than 20.8 degrees.
The warmest place in the Netherlands was Deelen in Gelderland, where the temperature did not fall below 24.4 degrees. It was also well above 23 degrees in Flevoland, western parts of Zeeland and in the Wadden Sea area.
Friday night is also set to be warm, with temperatures of between 20 and 22 degrees, after reaching well over 30 degrees during the day, weather forecasters say.
This weekend it will be a little cooler, with temperatures in the high 20s. Thunderstorms are also likely on Saturday, the KNMI weather bureau said.
The Netherlands is now officially in the middle of a heatwave – defined as five days with temperatures of over 25 degrees, of which three are over 30 degrees. The hot spell is set to continue well into August.
