Just say no: Senate vote ends the advisory referendum

After two ‘no’ votes from the Dutch people, the second chamber has joined parliament in ending the advisory referendum.

NOS reports on Tuesday that the Senate has also voted to scrap the controversial referendum ruling, which in any case was advisory.

The D66 liberal democrats, who had proposed the law in the first place, voted to end it, after much criticism.

Since 2015, it had led to two referendums, one on a trade treaty between the EU and Ukraine and a second on new security and ‘tapping’ laws. Both led to a ‘no’ win.
