Queen Máxima has cancelled a string of public engagements following news of the death of her youngest sister, at the age of 33.

Nor will she accompany the king on the state visit to Lithuania, Estonia and Latvia next week, the state information service RVD told Dutch media.

Inés Zorreguieta was found dead at her home in Buenos Aires and, according to the RVD, she may have committed suicide.

Máxima said in a reaction that she is ‘very shocked and very upset’ by the news, the RVD said.

Inés Zorreguieta, who was one of the bridesmaids at Máxima’s wedding to Willem-Alexander and is godmother to princess Ariane, suffered from an eating disorder in the past and, according to Argentine media, had problems with depression.
