Schiphol airport was closed for a time in the early hours of Sunday morning after a power cut caused chaos and the check-in systems could no longer operate.

Train services were disrupted and Schiphol access roads were closed to traffic after the departures halls became too full with travellers waiting for flights.

Although the power cut was over by around 6.30am, Schiphol is warning passengers to expect delays and cancellations and said no incoming flights will be landing before 9am. There will also be reduced capacity between 9am and 11am.

Easyjet said on its website it had cancelled some flights.

Edward Broekhaar from Zwolle arrived at the airport at 5.30am for a flight to Rome and said the situation was chaotic, with check-ins closed. ‘It took until 6.15 before we knew what was going on,’ he told broadcaster NOS.
