Football club FC Twente has been relegated to the Jupiler league after 34 years of top-flight Dutch football.

Twente’s fate at the bottom of the Eredivisie was sealed after Sunday’s 5-0 loss to Vitesse of Arnhem. ‘It is terrible, really, really terrible,’ club director Erik Velderman said after the match.

Just eight years ago, under the leadership of ambitious chairman Joop Munsterman, Twente took the Dutch league title and had big European ambitions. They were also runners up in 2011.

However, the club ran into financial trouble again in the 2014-15 season, and was given a three point penalty by the Dutch FA for failing to get their finances in order.

The KNVB threatened to relegate them to the first division because of their financial difficulties in 2016, but the club survived on appeal.
