Princess Beatrix, who announced her abdication from the throne five years ago, is celebrating her 80th birthday on Wednesday, quietly at home with members of her family.
Despite handing over the crown to her eldest son Willem-Alexander, Beatrix is still busy opening exhibitions and events and working on behalf of her favourite charities, according to royalty expert Justine Marcella of Vorstin magazine.
Beatrix was inaugurated as queen in 1980 but reverted to the title of princess on her abdication.
There will be a larger celebration at the palace on the Dam in Amsterdam on Saturday.
