Plans to erect a ferris wheel next to Rotterdam’s indoor market complex have infuriated people who live in the Markthal because of the likely impact on their privacy, according to local broadcaster RTV Rijnmond.

The fairground attraction, which rises 50 metres above the ground, has a one-year licence for the coveted city centre spot.

At an information evening for locals on Monday evening, residents were furious about the plan because they were not consulted earlier. ‘So I’ll no longer be able to go naked from my bedroom to the bathroom,’ said one.

Others were concerned about their personal safety and about the privacy of their children.

Perry Oerlemans, director of the project which is known as the Dinner Wheel, said there are a number of ‘creative solutions’ for locals. Residents have until January 18 to protest about the plan.
