A Polish man who shouted at military police at Schiphol airport last year that he was a terrorist has been given a three month suspended jail sentence on appeal.

The public prosecution department had called for a two month jail term, one month suspended, and a five year ban from the airport.

The appeal court ruled that the man, who was drunk at the time, had no prior criminal record and had lost his job and girlfriend because of the incident. The bomb threat was ‘the unbelievably stupid action of a drunken man,’ the court said.

At the first hearing last year, the man was fined €500.

The 25-year-old man, who was carrying two large rucksacks, was arrested after a military police dog indicated they may contain explosives. The police had been tipped off by passersby who reported seeing the man acting suspiciously.

Parts of the airport were closed for over four hours while police made sure there was no security risk. Security at Schiphol has been stepped up following the Brussels bombings.
