Police in Groningen have recovered a body of a student from a canal close to the spot where he went missing last week.

Wytze Pennink, 18, was reported missing after he failed to return home on Friday morning from a night out. Around 300 people took part in a search operation and handed out photos and flyers in the city centre on Saturday afternoon.

Pennink was a member of the student society Vindicat. The last known sighting of him was just after 5.30am on Friday, when a CCTV camera on Spilsluizen recorded him walking close to the spot where the body was found.

His housemate Pieter Croll told RTV Noord: ‘It’s not unusual for one of us to come home [from a night out] after midday. But the alarm bells started to ring on Friday afternoon.’
