Schiphol to cut back on security guards

Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport is to cut around 20% of the security guards who check passengers at the gates.

To achieve this, passengers will no longer be checked at the gates but at five central control posts, broadcaster Nos reports.

A Schiphol spokesman told the Nos that the new set up means fewer security guards are needed, but that this will not affect safety.

It is hoped that the 20% reduction will be reached in 2015 by not filling vacancies.

On Tuesday, security guards held a protest march for fixed contracts and better working conditions, but also against the workforce cuts.
