Officials seized €91m from convicted criminals last year

Justice ministry officials managed to claw back €91m from convicted criminals last year, including cash, boats and expensive cars, the AD reports on Wednesday.

In 2012, officials managed to confiscate €51m in criminal earnings. The increase is due to renewed justice ministry efforts to make sure crime does not pay, and extra expenditure of €20m, the paper said.

‘The money is primarily meant for the victims,’ spokesman Erwin Schievink told the paper. The rest of the proceeds goes to the treasury.

The confiscated property this year includes a speedboat seized from a 41-year-old man suspected of marijuana cultivation. In October, €700,000 in cash was found hidden under the bed of a man jailed for one year. The paper did not say what the man’s crime was.
