Chinese to become optional Dutch school subject

A pilot programme to teach Chinese in Dutch secondary schools is a success and pupils will soon be able to take final exams in the subject, junior education minister Sander Dekker said on Monday.

Nine schools took part in the pilot project, which started in 2010. Forty schools have expressed an interest in offering Chinese as an alternative foreign language, news agency ANP quotes the minister as saying.
