The Limburg city of Venlo is opening what is thought to be first Dutch clinic specifically to help people with suicidal thoughts.
The local health board hopes the initiative will offer low-threshold help to people who feel suicidal as well as their families, Nos television reports.
‘People who have tried to kill themselves are often really desperate,’ said a spokesman. ‘We hope to be able to talk to them and help them find answers.’
The special clinic will open its doors in November. Some 1,600 people commit suicide in the Netherlands every year. Seven out of 10 are male and half are aged 40 to 60.
