New record low temperatures in Limburg and spring is a long way off

The temperature plunged to below -10 Celsius in parts of Limburg on Tuesday night, shattering more weather records.

In the village of Ell the temperature fell as low as -13 Celsius, while the average temperature in Eindhoven was -11.9 Celcius, news agency ANP reported.

This is well below the old record of -9.7 Celsius set in the winter of 1962 for the second 10-day period in March.

Frost is not unusual in March and April but very heavy frosts are rare. Up to 20 cm of snow has fallen in southern parts of the country.

No spring just yet

There will be some snow showers on Wednesday, but slightly warmer temperatures are on their way, the KNMI said. Temperatures will be around 4 Celsius in coastal areas and just above freezing inland.

There will again be heavy frosts on Wednesday night and some snow. The picture is similar for Thursday and Friday but with more sun, the KNMI weather bureau said.

The likelihood of a return to spring-like weather in the next two weeks is ‘slight’, the KNMI said.
