No criminal probe into football match rigging yet, says justice dept

There is not currently enough concrete evidence to merit a criminal investigation into football match-fixing in the Netherlands, the public prosecution department told news agency ANP on Wednesday.

The department was commenting on yesterday’s report by Europol, which identified 380 matches across the continent which it says were fixed by an Asia-based crime syndicate.

The five Dutch nationals said to be involved in match-fixing all live abroad and one, the department said, is currently the focus of German criminal investigation.

Sports minister Edith Schippers recently sanctioned a ministry probe into match-fixing which is set to be completed by the summer.
