Deposits on plastic bottles will go, says minister

Ministers plan to press ahead with scrapping deposits on plastic bottles, despite concerns from Labour MPs, junior environment minister Wilma Mansveld told parliament on Thursday.

Good agreements have been made about collecting plastic waste, the minister said in a briefing.
The deposit system is due to be phased out in 2014. The packaging industry argues the current system is inefficient and expensive.
Labour MP Manon Fokke said during a debate on the infrastructure and environment ministry’s budget on Tuesday that she and fellow Labour MPs would like to expand the deposit system to small bottles as well.
