Dutch foreign minister congratulates new Egyptian president

Foreign minister Uri Rosenthal has congratulated Mohammed Mursi on his victory in the Egyptian presidential election but said the Muslim Brotherhood member will be judged by his deeds.

Mursi, who took 51.7% of the vote, has called for national unity following his victory as Egypt’s first democratically elected leader.
As president, Mursi will have to ‘lead the country further along the route to democratic transition’, the Dutch foreign minister is quoted as saying by the Telegraaf.
Freedom of speech
To do this, it is important that ‘the legal system is strengthened, lawlessness is combated and fundamental human rights, including freedom of speech and freedom of religion and belief are guaranteed,’ Rosenthal said.
According to the BBC, the White House said Mursi’s win is ‘a milestone for Egypt’s transition to democracy’.
‘We believe it is essential for the Egyptian government to continue to fulfil Egypt’s role as a pillar of regional peace, security and stability,’ the broadcaster quoted spokesman Jay Carney as saying.
