Vodafone network problems continue

The problems for Vodafone mobile phone users, caused by a fire on Wednesday at its Rotterdam centre, could go on for a week according to one telecom expert, quoted by the Volkskrant.


Vodafone shut down its Rotterdam network as a precautionary measure, but has now set up an emergency centre, although not all the masts have been connected yet.
On Wednesday the telecom company promised to have the problem solved by this morning, but it is now not prepared to say when telephone, messaging and internet traffic will be back to normal.
Under capacity
‘They are now operating with very little capacity,’ telecom expert Paul Brand of Stratix told the Volkskrant. ‘It could take a week to get back to full capacity,’ he said.
The fire started in the building next door to Vodafone but spread over the joint roof to the telecom centre. Fire and water damage are expected to have damaged everything in the centre.
Vodafone has five major transmission centres in the Netherlands. With Rotterdam out of action, the other four are picking up extra traffic until the emergency centre is fully operational.
Economic affairs minister Maxime Verhagen said on Thursday he is to hold talks with other telecoms operators to try to set up a national roaming agreement to cope with similar situations.
