Unknown Rembrandt identified

A painting of an old man with a beard has been confirmed as the work of Dutch old master Rembrandt, Nos television reported on Friday.

It was already known that one of Rembrandt’s pupils had made a copy of the work.
However, experts are convinced the original is by the master himself because it has been painted over an unfinished portrait of Rembrandt. Modern techniques make it possible to uncover different layers of paint.
Rembrandt expert Ernst van de Wetering told the broadcaster the painting dates from around 1630. The work is currently in private hands but will be on loan to the Rembrandthuis museum next year for an exhibition.
