‘Serious incidents’ at Hollands only nuclear power plant

There have been a number of serious and ‘unacceptable’ incidents in the Netherlands’ only nuclear power station, Borssele in Zeeland, since the 1980s, a former energy industry professor told Radio 1 at the weekend.

In total, 372 incidents at Borssele have been reported to the government’s nuclear physics service over the past 31 years. Of those, a number could have had very serious consequences, Cees Andriesse, told the programme.
For example, in 1986, the electricity supply failed while a new transformer was being started up and none of the emergency water cooling systems could operate. An emergency electricity supply from a nearby coal-fired power station was used to keep the system running.
‘We escaped by the skin of our teeth,’ Andriesse said.
