ProRail chief steps down on health grounds

The head of state-owned rail operating company ProRail is standing down on February 1 for health reasons.

Bert Klerk, 59, has a form of lymphatic cancer. He has headed the company since it was set up in 2005.
Klerk told company workers at a New Year reception his decision to stand down is not connected to the recent weather-driven chaos on the railways or strong criticism from MPs and ministers.
He will be replaced by supervisory board member Claudia Zuiderwijk until a permanent successor is found.
