Cable company Ziggo does not have to block file swap website The Pirate Bay, a judge in The Hague ruled on Monday.
Copyright lobby group Brein went to court in an effort to have the website removed because it allows users to illegally download films, music and software. The site was earlier ruled illegal in the Netherlands but remains online because its servers are abroad.
Ziggo said in May it would not comply with Brein’s demands. ‘We are simply a channel,’ said a spokesman in the NRC. ‘We give people access to the internet and support an open internet.’
Brein says resorting to the courts is the foundation’s last resort in its campaign to have illegal sites shut down. It has targeted Ziggo as the biggest cable company in the country in the hope of establishing anti-piracy jurisprudence.
