Police not charged over beach party shooting

Five police officers involved in a fatal shooting incident at a beach party at the end of the summer will not face prosecution, the Hague’s chief prosecutor Theo Hofstee told a news conference on Tuesday.

The men were defending themselves against extreme violence and did not act out of proportion when they drew their weapons, Hofstee said.
A 19-year-old youth was shot dead when a large gang of youths turned on the police at the Sunset Grooves party in Hoek van Holland. In total, 45 people were arrested.
Hofstee said 21 police officers fired their guns a total of 76 times during the riots. ‘Most, 60, were warning shots. Five officers shot directly [at targets],’ he said. ‘Seven people were hit and Robby van der Leeden died of his wounds.’
