Cobra artist Tajiri dies aged 85

American-Japanese sculptor Shinkichi Tajiri, who became part of the Cobra art movement, died at his home in Baarlo in the southern Dutch province of Limburg this weekend at the age of 85.

Tajiri left the US in 1948 in protest at the way the country treated Japanese nationals during World War II. He moved to Amsterdam with his second wife, Dutch artist Ferdi Jansen, in 1956 and settled in Baarlo six years later.
Tajiri’s works include the four massive iron gate wardens on the main bridge in Venlo and the ‘meeting point’ sculpture at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.
