A long-running dispute between a Tilburg priest and local people about church bells is set to end after the city council has ruled the bells can only be rung after 7.30am.
Until now, priest Harm Schilder rang the bells at 7.15am to summon people to early mass, much to the fury of people living close to the Margarita Maria church.
In 2007, Schilder was told he faced a €5,000 fine if he continued to ring the bells in the early morning. He claimed the right to call the faithful to prayer is part of the religious freedom.
