Taxicentrale Amsterdam was formally set up in 1995 to replace two separate associations of taxi drivers, the VVOT and the VZTe, which in turn had replaced four organisations in the 1970s. TCA had a monopoly in the capital until the official taxi licence was abolished in 1998 – a decision which led to the so-called taxi wars and a string of legal problems. TCA now represents 1,900 drivers and is seen as one of the good guys in the ongoing struggle to sort out the mess caused by the liberalisation of the taxi market. All typical untranslatable Dutch words and expressions translated in the Dictionairy of Dutchness
