Naarden-based venture capital firm Forbion, which specialises in life sciences companies, has raised €2.3 billion for 2 new biotech funds, its largest fundraising to date.

The firm says it is one of the biggest life sciences venture capital fundraisings in the past 5 years. It takes Forbion’s assets to around €7.5 billion, which it says makes it Europe’s largest specialist life sciences investor, citing data from research firm Preqin.

The funds will finance around 30 companies, ranging from early-stage firms to those already testing drugs on patients.

Forbion says some of the money will go to companies in North America as well as Europe.

Investors include Dutch pension money managers MN and PGGM, as well as US drugmaker Eli Lilly.

The cabinet named life sciences and biotechnology as one of 4 sectors in which it wants to recruit highly skilled foreign workers, under a national talent strategy agreed in July.
