The Rotterdammers were made to work for their points in a seven-goal thriller at Telstar.
They took the lead after just 25 seconds when Gaoussou Diarra finished off a sweeping move and were 3-1 up after 32 minutes when Sem Steijn profited from good combination work by Gjivai Zechiël and Givairo Read.
Patrick Brouwer reduced the deficit five minutes later, but a second-half penalty by Steijn proved to be enough despite Noach Shenkman scoring a third for Telstar on 69 minutes.
Peter Bosz refused to blame the last-minute defeat at ADO on his injury crisis as he looks ahead to a testing week, with a trip to Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday followed by the visit of Feyenoord on Sunday.
PSV looked to be on course for a routine win when Sven Mijnans put them ahead in the 21st minute. But the midfielder’s dismissal just before half-time triggered a second-half collapse that culminated in Matej Sin’s headed winner for ADO in the 93rd minute.
Mijnans, who played as a makeshift striker, will be suspended for the game against Feyenoord, while Guus Til also went off after complaining of blurred vision after landing hard on his neck in the first half and is doubtful for the next week.
But Bosz said he did not fear his team was sliding into a “tricky situation” in the absence of other senior players such as Jerdy Schouten, Ricardo Pepi and new signing Sami Ouaissa.
“This is another chance to win a game,” he said. “Stick our chests out and not think in fear.”
AZ drop points
AZ Alkmaar also dropped points against a newly promoted club as they could only draw 2-2 with Cambuur Leeuwarden even after the Friesland club lost Devid Bouah to a second yellow card early in the second half.
Twente Enschede missed the chance to leap into second place as Spanish striker Ángel Alarcón scored two superb goals for Utrecht to lift Anthony Correia’s team to 11th place.
Julian Brandt and Jorthy Mokio both scored twice as Ajax won 5-2 in Groningen in a match that saw both goalkeepers save penalties.
A double by Anthony Descotte looked to have earned Fortuna Sittard the points at NEC until Willum Thór Willumsson popped up with an injury-time header to snatch a draw for the struggling Nijmegen club.
