PSV dominated the first half as they deployed a close-passing, tiki-taka style to stifle Feyenoord, but only had Guus Til’s well-taken volley after 20 minutes to show for it.
Ten minutes after the break Feyenoord equalised when Anis Hadj Moussa was given too much space to charge down the right flank and bend a shot inside the far post.
The Algerian had a good chance for a second towards the end, while PSV goalkeeper Matej Kovar had to be alert to keep out a header by Nacho Ferri from close range.
“We were by far the better team today and had the better chances,” said PSV coach Peter Bosz. “We started the second half badly and made a mistake, after which Hadj Moussa scored. And even then we could have won it.”
Ajax go second
Ajax overtook PSV to close the gap at the top to three points with a hard-fought win at Sparta. Veteran striker Jens Toornstra scored for Sparta on his 500th Eredivisie appearance, but Abdellah Ouazane and Tolu Arokodare, the scorers against Atalanta in midweek, were on target again to claim the win for Ajax.
Twente moved up to fourth place as two late goals by Sondre Ørjasæter and Lucas Vennegoor of Hesselink earned a 2-0 win at AZ Alkmaar, who like Twente and PSV have 20 points.
Fortuna Sittard also snatched the points late on against Excelsior as Rodrigo Guth headed in a corner in injury time to keep the Limburg club in sixth place, two points further back.
At the other end of the table, the return of Adrie Koster as veteran coach brought no relief to Willem II, who crashed to a 6-1 home defeat to Cambuur.
The Tilburgers remain four points behind ADO Den Haag, who were unable to keep up the momentum of last week’s win against PSV as they lost 3-2 at home to Heerenveen.
Telstar lost by the same margin at Go Ahead Eagles, whose striker Søren Tengstedt netted twice in the first half to lead the Eredivisie scoring charts with eight goals.
