Rieu had proposed to turn the historic city centre building into a life-sized Christmas gift, with string lights and an illuminated bow.
The 4-star Hotel Derlon dates from 1870 and was bought by Rieu in 2025.
He had done up the hotel in the same manner last year, but the city’s Planning and Monuments Commission found the decorations to be excessive, according to local news outlet L1.
The hotelier was told he needed to choose between the bow and the string lights to allow the building’s architecture to be visible.
Rieu told regional broadcaster 1Zuid he was irritated with the decision. “We’re talking about Christmas lights. I don’t think anyone is bothered by that,” he said.
