AZ top Eredivisie after Twente stage late comeback against PSV

AZ Alkmaar go into the international break as Eredivisie league leaders after PSV were hit by two late goals at Twente to suffer their first defeat of the season.

The champions suffered an early blow when striker Ricardo Pepi limped off with an injury after nine minutes.

Twente dominated the first 20 minutes and could have had more to show for it than Younes Taha’s opportunistic strike. But two quick goals by stand-in striker Guus Til turned the match around just before the half-hour mark.

PSV surrendered their lead when Wout Weghorst sprung a poorly set offside trap before finishing coolly. And eight minutes from time French midfielder Daouida Weidmann ran all the way from the halfway line and steered the ball around Matej Kovar for the winner.

Ronald Koeman Jr. did his best to deny AZ Alkmaar victory in the Noord-Holland derby, but was unable to keep out Mexx Meerdinck’s 19th-minute shot. AZ were denied a second when Meerdinck handled the ball just before squaring it to Kees Smit.

Feyenoord rampant

Feyenoord moved up to second place with another salvo of goals, including a double for Anis Hadj-Moussa, against struggling Utrecht to take their tally for the season to 25 in just seven matches.

Julian Brandt scored for the third match in a row for Ajax, but the Amsterdammers could only manage a draw at home against Excelsior despite having 33 shots on target.

The Rottterdam club took a 2-1 lead when Aymen Sliti finished off a flowing move in the 62nd minute, but two minutes later summer loan signing Tolu Arokodare showed his strength to tap in an equaliser.

Fortuna Sittard kept up their good start to the season as Philip Brittijn’s late goal was enough to send Willem II to the bottom of the table.

Groningen cruised to a 3-0 win against PEC Zwolle, who were still smarting from last week’s 7-0 drubbing by Feyenoord.

Heerenveen hit four goals against Sparta to record their first win since the opening day of the season, while NEC’s rocky start to the season continued as they could only manage a home draw against Go Ahead Eagles.

In the battle of the newly promoted clubs, ADO Den Haag picked up a precious point at home to Cambuur Leeuwarden to lift themselves off the bottom of the table as Donát Bárány equalised in the 74th minute.
