The research firm predicts that 91,000 homes will be built in 2026 and around 100,000 in 2027.
This would mark the first time the government has ever hit its goal for new home construction.
“It now comes down to perseverance. Because everyone knows: the final stretch is the hardest,” housing minister Elanor Boekholt-O’Sullivan said in a letter to parliament.
The calculations are based in part on requests for new building permits. According to the report, the number of permits have “risen sharply” since October 2023. On average it takes 27 months from the issuance of a permit to a livable house.
Currently, there is a 4.6% housing shortage in the Netherlands, down from 4.8% in 2025.
The report does warn, however, that the construction of new homes could be hindered by pressure on the power grid and concerns about nitrogen emissions.
