Three people have died, including two children, after a car collided with a group of children cycling in Zeeland.

Four other children were seriously injured when the car left the road on a bend and hit the cyclists on a bike path, Omroep Zeeland reported. The condition of the driver is not known.

The collision happened on the N290, a single carriageway road between the villages of Terhole and Vogelwaarde, in Zeeuws-Vlaanderen, at around 12.30pm.

A total of 14 children were cycling in the group as part of a school summer camp, accompanied by two parents. The regional safety board confirmed that the adult who died was one of the parents.

Police, fire crews and an air ambulance were all involved in the emergency operation.

The injured victims were taken to the university hospitals of Gent and Antwerp, across the border in Belgium, and the Erasmus MC hospital in Rotterdam. The road has been closed in both directions.
