The single-storey building in Lelystad was reported on fire at around 5.45am on Thursday. Local firefighters struggled to tackle the flames because of a lack of water supplies in the area.
Fire crews from Swifterbant, Dronten and Ens joined the effort, but were unable to save the building and eventually had to let it burn down. The cause is being investigated.
Thick smoke rose from the site, but a lack of wind meant it was contained in a small area. A cycle path along Zuigerplasdreef was closed because of fears that the roof could contain asbestos.
The club had been closed since June 1 after the municipality bought the site for €4 million as part of plans to develop the area.
