Dutch national grid company Tennet has concluded that Eemshaven on the coast in the north of Groningen province is the only suitable location for two additional Dutch nuclear power stations, the Volkskrant reported on Thursday.

The government plans to speed up the development of nuclear power and Tennet had been asked to make recommendations about four possible locations.

The advice, which has not yet been published, says Eemshaven is the only option, rejecting Borssele in Zeeland where sole Dutch nuclear power station is based, nearby Terneuzen and the Maasvlakte port area.

In its report, Tennet says that the infrastructural changes needed in Zeeland would present more challenges and be more expensive than those required in Eemshaven.

However, Groningen’s provincial authorities have flatly rejected the idea of locating the plants there.

“Groningen province and the local authorities of Het Hogeland and Eemsdelta are opposed to locating nuclear power stations here, as is well known,” the paper quotes the province as saying.

The cabinet is expected to comment on Tennet’s recommendations on Friday.
