Public transport workers are to go on strike on June 24 to show their opposition to government plans to increase the state pension age and reduce unemployment benefits.

The strike will affect trains, buses, trams and metro and will take place ahead of the morning rush hour, ending at around 8am, the FNV trade union federation said.

The strike will cause problems for commuters who start work early or want to return home from night shifts.

“We understand very well that travellers will face difficulties,” the union said. “But the cabinet refuses to listen to the concerns of workers. Our members see no other option other than to strike.”

Other FNV affiliated unions are also planning to strike, including the port sector, as part of the campaign against government cuts.
