Plus supermarket group completes Coop merger, posts €56m loss

The merger between supermarkets Plus and Coop has been completed, five years after the two companies announced plans to join forces, Plus said at the publication of its 2025 annual report on Wednesday.

The merger continues to impact the company’s results, and Plus booked a loss for the fourth year in a row. It ended the year €56 million in the red, compared with a €53 million loss in 2024.

Sales fell to €4.3 billion, taking the combined market share from 9.3% to 8.4%, according to figures from NielsenIQ. At the time of the merger, the two cooperatives controlled around 10% of the market. Albert Heijn and Jumbo are Dutch market leaders.

Despite the losses, Plus plans to grow further via takeovers, chief executive Aart van Haren told the Financieele Dagblad. “We have to grow,” he said. “It is always a good idea to spread costs across more outlets.” Plus currently operates 439 stores, having closed or sold off 86 in 2025.
