NEC Nijmegen reached the final of the Dutch cup with a pulsating 3-2 victory over PSV, dashing Peter Bosz’s hopes of winning the double.

The home side went ahead in the fifth minute with a breakaway that started in their own half and ended when Bryan Linssen put away a rebound from Sami Ouiassa’s shot.

PSV responded with two goals in 15 minutes. First Joey Veerman won back the ball after an attack on the left broke down and Ivan Perisic sent over a cross to Ismael Saibari, who was lurking unmarked at the back post.

Dennis Man then picked up a loose pass on the right and was allowed to run unchallenged between four defenders before steering the ball inside the right-hand post to give the visitors the lead.

But NEC were level again eight minutes before half-time when Noé Lebreton’s half-volley completely wrong-footed Matej Kovar and flew into the far corner.

Linssen had a chance to equalise just before the break when he was picked out in the penalty area, but his shot was too weak to beat Kovar, while at the other end Saibari struck the base of the post with a diagonal shot.

NEC had two calls for a penalty turned down early in the second half as first Tjaronn Chery and then Linssen were toppled in the penalty area while contesting high balls.

PSV were on the front foot, but the host went back in front when Lebreton’s precise cross from the left landed at the feet of Bașar Önal, who tapped it past Kovar.

Jesper Cillessen pulled off a point-blank save to keep out Armando Obispo’s header as PSV pressed for an equaliser, while his opposite number Kovar denied Youssef El Kachati after the substitute was put clear through.

The second semi-final on Wednesday pits last year’s beaten finalists AZ Alkmaar against Telstar, with the winners playing NEC in De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam on April 19.
