Jail agency considers tablets with softcore porn for prisoners

The Dutch prisons’ agency, which oversees facilities at detention centres, is considering giving prisoners access to tablets that would include “softcore” pornography.

Officials are considering allowing inmates access to the technology to offset an increase in the amount of time they are spending in their cells as jails grapple with severe staff shortages.

In documents seen by RTL, the tablets will include films, music, courses, games and “soft erotica” for the sexual health of prisoners.

Multiple parties in parliament are opposed to the move, including most of the far right plus coalition parties VVD and CDA. “Cell time isn’t free time, it’s a punishment,” JA21 leader Joost Eerdmans told RTL.

Prisoners are currently allowed to use tablets through a pilot project at Nieuwegein, Schiphol Airport, Alphen aan den Rijn, and Krimpen detention centres.

According to the justice ministry, which began the trial last year, the tablets do not have internet connections and prisoners have no access to social media. “The tablets are used for education, watching informative videos, and to provide structure,” the prisons agency said in a promotional statement about the project.
