Denzel Dumfries was sent off as the Netherlands had to settle for a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in a chaotic friendly match in Eindhoven.

The Inter Milan defender was given a straight red card in the 12th minute when he pulled back Gonzalo Plata as the midfielder threatened to break clear on goal.

Oranje were 1-0 up at the time thanks to an early own goal by Willian Pacho, who backheeled a cross by Cody Gakpo past his own goalkeeper.

Ecuador were denied an equaliser five minutes later when Mark Flekken tipped John Yeboah’s shot onto the post with his fingertips, before Donyell Malen went close from 40 metres in a lively opening spell.

The visitors made their man advantage count following the departure of Dumfries and went level from the penalty spot after Flekken brought down Plata in the area. The goalkeeper went the right way but was unable to keep out Enner Valencia’s shot.

Ecuador posed the greater threat, pinning the Dutch back in their own half, while struggling to create clear chances.

Midway through the second half Quinten Timber sent Bryan Brobbey clear with a perfectly measured pass, but the Sunderland striker’s shot was blocked at the lsat minute.

Head coach Ronald Koeman said the early red card was a test of the team’s resilience and ability to adapt.

“It’s a situation you can come up against in a finals tournament, when you have to play for the result, and I thought it went very well in the second half,” he said. “They had a lot of corners but no really big chances, and that’s something you want to see from your team.”

Oranje also learned the identity of their final World Cup group opponents after Sweden beat Poland 3-2 in the European play-offs. The Swedes will join Tunisia and Japan in a group with the Netherlands.

Koeman’s team have one more friendly match against Algeria on June 3, before kicking off their World Cup campaign against Japan 11 days later.
