February has started with sharp contrasts in the weather, with wintry conditions in the north and much milder weather further south, and that pattern is set to continue for several days, according to weather bureau Weeronline.

Night frosts, which have again caused slippery conditions in the north, will persist, while daytime temperatures in the south may reach double figures, the service said in its monthly forecast.

In the north-east, temperatures will only just rise above freezing and skating may be possible locally on flooded fields or artificial outdoor rinks. The weather will be mixed, with clouds, sunshine and occasional rain or snow.

Around the middle of the month, colder air over the north is expected to push southwards, bringing below-average temperatures across the country, Weeronline said. There will be some sunshine, but also occasional snowfall.

Towards the end of February, colder air is set to retreat northwards again, increasing regional differences. The north is likely to remain cool, while temperatures in the south could again reach double figures.

Weeronline warns that people sensitive to alder and hazel pollen should be alert to hay fever symptoms on dry days. More of these trees and shrubs come into bloom in February, releasing pollen into the air, particularly during dry weather.
