Short-track star Xandra Velzeboer wins her second Olympic gold

Xandra Velzeboer has added a second short-track Olympic gold medal to her collection after winning the 1,000 metres on Monday morning.
Velzeboer takes over the title from Suzanne Schulting, who won gold in 2018 and 2022. Canada’s Courtney Sarault took silver and South Korea’s Kim Gilli bronze.
The distance is not her strongest and Velzeboer has only made the podium over 1,000 metres once in this season’s World Cup events. But she was seen as the favourite following her victory in the 500 metres.
The Dutch short-track team now have four gold medals to their name, their best ever performance, with the men’s 500 metres, women’s 1,500 metres and the two relay finals still to come.
The long track squad, traditionally the stars of the Dutch Olympic squad, have won two.
