Marijke Groenewoud and Jorrit Bergsma have added two more gold medals to the Dutch Winter Olympic collection, each taking the top spot in the mass start race.

The gold is 27-year-old Groenewoud’s first individual medal, having won silver in the team pursuit earlier in the Games. She follows Irene Schouten, who won mass start gold at the Beijing Olympics four years ago. Ivanie Blondin of Canada and Mia Manganello took silver and bronze.

In the men’s race, Jorrit Bergsma won gold ahead of Viktor Thorup of Denmark and Andrea Giovannini of Italy, who edged out favourite Jordan Stolz. It is the 40-year-old’s second medal of the Games after he won a surprise bronze in the 10,000 metres.

The Dutch squad has won 20 medals at the Games, including 10 gold, which is a record. The Netherlands is now in third place in the medals table, just ahead of Italy, with one day of competition to go.

Five of the Dutch golds were for long-track speed skating events and five for short-track.
