Jenning de Boo won Olympic silver in the 500 metres on Saturday after again losing a head-to-head showdown with favourite Jordan Stolz of the US.

Stolz took gold in an Olympic record of 33.77, with De Boo clocking 33.88. Canada’s Laurent Dubreuil claimed bronze in 34.26.

For De Boo, the reigning world champion, it was a second silver medal of the Games after his runner-up finish in the 1,000 metres earlier in the week, again behind Stolz. It brings the Dutch tally in Italy to eight medals.

Sebas Diniz narrowly missed out on the podium, finishing fifth in 34.46, 0.20 seconds behind Dubreuil. Joep Wennemars placed 21st in 34.89 after a disappointing 1,000 metres earlier in the week.

Earlier in the day, the women’s team pursuit squad of Joy Beune, Marijke Groenewoud and Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong set the third fastest time of the day to qualify for the semi-finals.

The Netherlands will meet world record holder Japan in Tuesday’s clash, with Canada and the US competing for the second final slot.

The Olympic speed skating programme continues on Sunday with the women’s 500 metres. Femke Kok, Jutta Leerdam and Anna Boersma are in action for the Netherlands.
