Two men, 39 and 40, jailed for attacking officials at New Year

Two men have been jailed at fast-track court hearings in Den Bosch for their role in this year’s New Year disturbances.

A 39-year-old man who punched a police officer in the face after being expelled from a nightclub has been jailed for two weeks, with 12 days suspended, and ordered to pay a €1,000 fine plus €300 to the police officer.

A second man, a 40-year-old from Eindhoven, was jailed for four months, with two months suspended, for throwing fireworks at council wardens on bikes. He told the court he had not done it deliberately, but the magistrate said the fact he had already made eye contact suggested otherwise.

In total, some 250 people were arrested on New Year’s Eve itself, but more arrests are likely as surveillance camera footage is analysed, officials say.

The justice ministry published an overview of the violence on Wednesday. In total, 528 emergency service workers were attacked during the celebrations, including police officers, ambulance workers and council wardens. That is a rise of 184 on last year.
