Thursday rush hour quiet but marred by accidents and one death

It was considerably quieter on the roads during Thursday’s morning rush hour than on Wednesday, when the jams reached record levels, officials from the government’s highway department say.

There have, however, been several incidents and a code yellow weather warning remains in force because of slippery conditions on many roads.

One person was killed on the A1 near Apeldoorn when the car they were driving hit a tow truck. This is likely to have been caused by skidding on the frozen road, officials said.

Trains are also running, albeit with reduced services, and public transport is back to normal in many places. Travellers are being urged to check online to see whether the train or bus they plan to use is running.

Rain is set to move across the country later in the day, further adding to the difficulties on roads and bike paths that still have snow, according to weather bureau Weeronline.
