Several motorways in the Netherlands were closed early on Monday because of the icy conditions and accidents involving lorries, motoring organisation ANWB said.

Code orange warnings for freezing rain and black ice were in place across the country overnight, except in Zeeland. By morning rush hour, the warning only applied to the north and east, where the transport ministry’s road’s department said people should avoid travelling if possible.

Although temperatures in most parts of the country have now risen above freezing, roads may still be dangerous, the department said.

Two lanes on the A1 between Hengelo and Apeldoorn were closed after an accident caused by icy conditions. On the A12 near Duiven, a car overturned on the ice and came to rest on its roof on the embankment.

Earlier in the morning, the A6 between Almere-Stad and Almere Haven was also closed for a time, as was the A50 near the Grijsoord interchange.

Trains have been less affected by the weather than in recent days, but NS is still running a reduced timetable.Fewer intercity trains are running all day between The Hague Central and Nijmegen, and on some other routes until midday.

International train services are already operating according to the regular timetable.
