One of the massive clock hands on Utrecht’s Dom tower fell off on Wednesday, causing no injuries but killing time for those relying on the iconic landmark.

The minute hand, which weighs some 70 kilos, ended up on a lower storey of the tower but Utrecht local council cordoned off the square in case more of the clock came down.

“We don’t know if it’s anything to do with the snowfall. We don’t think so but we need to find out,” a council spokesman said.

In 2024, workers finished a five-year restoration of the 112 metre tower. The council said at the time it would not need any more major maintenance for the next 50 years.

The clock has been stopped but guided tours of the Dom will resume once the council determines it is safe to do so, local broadcaster RTV Utrecht reported.
